1 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Wednesday, April 02, 2014.  Rather than go back in ancient history for the "this day" thing today I am going to link "this day" in 2013 for the news thread.  The huge topic was still "why Romney lost in 2012".  We are still debating the same shit today, including the many myths that people keep slinging around despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.  Good for review since the primary runs will actually start some time this year before the mid-term elections are even held.   And things are already looking bad because the only people you hear about from our "friends" in the MFM are the typical RINO/DIABLO squishes.  Some things never change.

7 Ryan introduces a new budget plan to cut "the budget" by $5T over 10 years.  Of course all the actual cuts come later.  Not only that, but he has "supped with the Devil" using a short spoon.  Actual spending in the first two years will go up to satisfy Devil Patty Murray of WA.  And of course the Dems come out full against it because it has no tax increases.   It has zero chance of passing and besides that, Ryan has lost all credibility with me.

26 2. (AP) 8.2 quake April 1 http://tinyurl.com/ospebz4 The latest activity began with a strong magnitude-6.7 quake on March 16. Hundreds of smaller quakes followed in the weeks since. Just off the Chilean coast, the Nazca tectonic plate plunges beneath the South American plate, pushing the towering Andes cordillera to ever-higher altitudes. Chilean President Michelle Bachelet declared a state of emergency in the region and sent a military plane with 100 anti-riot police to join 300 soldiers deployed to prevent looting, and round up 300 escaped women prisoners (Iquique). Bachelet's government extended its tsunami warnings for northernmost Chile. Bachelet, who just returned to the presidency three weeks ago, spoke well after midnight, five hours after the quake struck. It was not lost on many Chileans that the last time Bachelet presided over a major quake, days before the end of her 2006-10 term, her emergency preparedness office prematurely waved off a tsunami danger. Most of the 500 dead from that 2010 magnitude-8.8 tremor survived the shaking, only to be caught in killer waves in a disaster that washed away many coastal communities. -- April 1 quake set off 6-foot tsunami waves, the lower end of what could have been 12-foot waves under the circumstances.

Morning, all.  Just checking in to say hi.

HereÂ’s a quick story about Dorothy Rodgers, the wife of Broadway composer Richard Rodgers (Oklahoma!, The King and I, Carousel).  It seems that she and her husband were visiting some friends who had a working farm and one morning Dorothy was invited to watch the cows being milked.  As she watched, one of the farmhands asked her if sheÂ’d like to take a turn.  So she sat on a stool, took a teat in her hand and began milking.

After a minute, she looked up, puzzled.  “I must be doing this wrong,” she said.  “IÂ’ve been pulling and pulling, but it doesnÂ’t get any bigger!”

Bye.

Posted by: Chi-Town Jerry at April 02, 2014 07:14 AM (b/lt+) Jerry, I think you get to the nub of the problem with the GOP. Instead of articulating free-market principles and individual liberty, they accept the trajectory and worldview of the left, and the inevitability of becoming some sort of socialist tyranny. The call should be loud, harsh and frequent. REPEAL. As well as cutting down the size and scope of the government to promote liberty and opportunity. This is easy. Aside from Ted Cruz, Mike Lee and Allen West, who the hell does this? Too bad, because it resonates.

I did likewise because he used to talk a good game and seemed to be very knowledgeable about cutting spending.  The first inkling that he might be a fucking liar came right after the 2010 midterms and the Tea Party triumph when he was on Hewitt's show and wouldn't give any specifics on cutting spending.  Hewitt, who I usually can't stand but he was very good on this, was doggedly pointing out that the election was a clear mandate for aggressive cost cutting and all Ryan kept repeating was "trust us to do the right thing".  Welp that didn't work out so well.

I am telling you I am so broke that my pockets are soreJ I cannot wait to go to the Prophet Muhammad’s(S) door and prank Isa bin Maryan and party so hard that it will rock Jannah to its core. 77 Glad people are doing it now. And don't beat up on Vic. Posted by: J.J. Sefton at April 02, 2014 07:24 AM (CMkNk) I don't mean to beat up on Vic, but I am tired of the misinformation running around. I have dealt with Common Core for 2+ years now. I know what it is and what it isn't. As I have said many times, you can argue with the implementation all you want, but if you give the actual Common Core a thorough study, you can't argue with the standards. I'm not talking about reading some blogs and sites like The Blaze and the Daily Caller; I'm talking about learning what the standards are. As I have pointed out many, many times, what everyone keeps pointing to as Common Core is not. It is a teacher/school/district's implementation. I am more than happy to discuss the standards themselves, but that's not what people want to do. They would prefer to believe facts that fit with their world view. We've talked about confirmation bias enough on this blog over the years. This is it in spades. Study the standards themselves, then I will be more than happy to discuss them. http://corestandards.org

The implementation of Common Core is what the problem is. It cedes control of education to the feds by subsuming everything under the mantle of "Standards."

It is certainly possible to create a good curriculum based on CC, but that would require real teachers and administrators, not the NEA flunkies we have now.

133 101 -

I've stayed out  of the Common Core discussion,  mostly because I think it's a substitute for some other element of the problems we have with education.

My assumption is that CC is not much more than an attempt to deal with lowest common denominator schools, i.e., the inner city types that don't have any standards at all!

Attempts to bring these schools in line haven't been terribly successful, so we're getting a new set of standards.

Are they better?  I don't know.  It probably matters almost not at all to school districts that  ALREADY offer quality education.

The problem is, we have no reason to believe this one will be more effective at bringing up to a standard, the districts that haven't been teaching basics  well for decades.  And there are other reasons why that is the case.  Too numerous to discuss here.

She studies for hours on the lessons given, only to have a test put in her face that has nothing to do with what's she's learned. This is all new, she's been an honor roll student her whole life and her grades of gone in the dumper this year. I think one of the biggest problems is the teachers haven't figured out exactly how to instruct them correctly on what the "standards" are expecting them to answer on the tests. Everyone is confused and frustrated. I'm not the only parent that has seen this, especially in our school

Now I'm on a cholesterol drug, I get it every 90 days, but I don't see any numbers on my OOP max tick up. Maybe I'm just misremembering, but it's possible on my plan drug costs don't count towards OOP max? If that's right (and it might not be) That makes these Obamacare plans (which heavily shifted drug costs to patients to backfill the problems Obamby created) an even more raw deal.

As I understand it, Common Core doesn't lower standards,  so much as it changes the arc of them.  It's not worth getting into the nitty gritty, but it would be something like now, when a statewide standard says all 7th graders must master basic algebra, CC would say you introduce algebra in 6h grade, and have it mastered by 8.

That's just my example off the top of my head, and is in no way reflective of what CC really says, it's just  an example of  HOW the standards are supposed to be implemented.

As for your child, my experience is that quality varies from classroom to classroom, and you have to be aware of what is going on in that room and building, lest your child  be subjected to shite.

Which is a different problem, and again, one  of the many many many problems with public education.  The standards by which  they measure success are a very small issue compared to the rest.

168 Education is a race you run with yourself.... Posted by: sven10077 at April 02, 2014 08:01 AM (TE35l) That is a truth. Given a course or syllabus to research, nothing is "learned" without the individual's asserted diligence in study. But again, another truth regards not wasting efforts "reinventing the wheel" -- we study from masters so as to make best progress in acquiring the desired goal, to attain knowledge, or better Wisdom. And with the apprenticeship to a great teacher, we more readily learn, and share in the communication element that humans crave as experience. OT irony, did you catch the "latest" findings that those people who run too much regularly suffer the same rate of early death as those people who don't exercise. Were I to imagine a parallel to an education race you run with yourself, I'd say it's a lonely and culturally empty race if not shared with others.

It's not worth getting into the nitty gritty, but it would be something like now, when a statewide standard says all 7th graders must master basic algebra, CC would say you introduce algebra in 6h grade, and have it mastered by 8.

-----------

The thing is, quite a few stakeholders were not included in the mix when those decisions were made, and if, say, parents have concerns they would have to take it up with the Federal Government's bureaucracy.  Ceding local control over standards is bad news and an obvious precursor to ceding local control over curriculum and content.

Plus, the standards for math and english are troubling, so much so that the only math expert on the CC validation committee refused to sign off on the standards because they don't do anything   to  lift underperforming districts up...instead they force overperforming districts down.  Much the same argument is made by one of the english subject matter experts on the validation committee, because the standards deemphasize literary study and thus impact student's critical thinking skills.

In sum, it's a pile of crap.

Otherwise, (Bourbon pro-business Democrat ) Cleveland warned that children were already losing their sense of Identity as Individuals, being encouraged by a few persistent idiots to "merge" into a working class of non-thinkers (machines). Still, even that turn-of-the 20th Century generation of youth learned proper English, appreciation of the greatest Literature, and mental calculation skills taught by Normal School graduate teachers. I suppose the Normal School (US teacher colleges) curriculum was directed in mastering the very curriculum and many approaches to "teaching lessons" according to childhood mental development as understood by Pedagogy of the day that encouraged children to learn from nature and experience what lessons were taught from books. Also, teachers then had no union, and a teacher could be summarily dismissed without reason. So it wasn't as if corporal punishment would have been the first and every resort applied to a dull student. The Aussie "Rake" tv series had an episode that made plain our sad state of public education and the systematic intentional obtuse perversion of language, to FAIL TO COMMUNICATE, to obfuscate and confuse. The episode's lead character protested transnational corporatist verbage meant to say nothing through the use of "big words" that could be arranged in any order, like a game. He himself was a retired high school English teacher whose grandfather (of "limited" formal education) wrote prose as beautifully and meaningfully as any great author, having read the great works and absorbed them in his own youth. A point made was that for all the years spent in public education, the graduates had less sense/meaning than when they entered the "factory" of school.

Honestly, I never really thought about it. I always kinda figured if I ever hit my OOP max, I've got bigger problems that will need dealing with so I'll just roll it all into one big "mega problem."

220 8 "That millionaire couple who were collecting all kinds of welfare while living a lavish lifestyle has been arrested for fraud." When this first came out, it sounded like this couple were living on a million dollar yacht. The pictures that accompanied the story showed a wooden hull 81 footer that wouldn't be worth half that much. However now, the linked article says the yacht was purchased with a down payment and subsequently repossessed in 2005. It also says these two were living with one of their grandmothers or in other houses not owned by them. Don't sound like millionaires to me. And what is this about having money in some accounts that they "had access to". That sounds like it wasn't theirs. I know I'm fucking up a perfectly good "rich people scam the welfare society" story, but it sure sounds like there is a different truth buried somewhere.

224 My cousin has been a teaching assistant at an elementary school in Lower Merion, a school district on the Main Line, for many years. They have some of the best schools in the country and were early adopters of Common Core.

She works with 3rd graders and says the frustration level for all involved is unbearable. An incorrect answer to a simple mathematical problem is acceptable as long as the student provides acceptable "reasoning" for the answer. She has an unlimited number of horror stories to share with anyone who will listen.

I can only imagine how this will go over in all the lousy school districts. Oh wait, they can choose their own curriculum and personalize it for their schools! Yeah, that's the ticket. Like they even know what they're doing. My school district (which stinks) will need to fire all the teachers, get all new texbooks and materials and basically reinvent teaching. That'll work. I already pay some of the highest school taxes, percentage-wise, in the state for my failing district. Well, at least it will provide the catalyst for getting me out of this area sooner than later.

That is to say, they're locus of power has been moved to add a sort of "plausible deniability" to it's panel members. Whereas the God Panels actually chose individuals. The IPAB will choose "treatments" to exclude. The effect is largely the same, some will live and some will die based on the decree of an uncaring government, but it allows the panel members to sleep better at night. (None of this should be taken to justify the IPABs, I'm merely recounting a history as it were. The lazy language is because I haven't had my coffee yet.)

Here.  Let me help:

In the beginning there was freedom.  It was protected, encouraged and grown by the efforts of good people who worked, dreamed, hoped and loved.  In time, some of those people became disillusioned with the idea of having to work to keep what their forefathers had built and they sought out ways to avoid and shirk it whenever possible.  For those who opposed working, dreaming, hoping and loving were enough.

This way of thinking began to catch on as more and more people realized that as long as someone was willing to work, they didn't have to do so themselves.  Like a plague, it spread, and soon the contagion of lassitude had overtaken the once free land.

Those who refused to work cried out to those who did not for aid, and in their charity, the workers agreed.  Their charity was mistaken for ignorance, and the lazy demanded more.  Again, the charitable inclinations of the workers overcame their hesitancy to indulge those who refused to contribute.

The cycle played out repeatedly over many years.  In time, the workers found themselves out-numbered and demonized by those who continued to increase their demands.  As supplies dwindled, refusals began.

It was then that the chaos came.

316 Posted by: jeannebodine at April 02, 2014 09:00 AM (2LJqa) I noticed that FOX has an American "Rake" series that had me confused when I first mentioned the Netflix streaming Aussie "Rake". I liked Rake, wondering what the hell jam he'd put himself into next. "Just deserts" final episode closing shot makes you swallow hard for the scoundrel. Btw, the lead legal character and mob boss wife were a married couple in another Aussie tv series we liked as a popular drama full of itself. Outrageous Fortune 2005-2010 When the West family patriarch, Wolfgang, is sentenced to four years in prison, his wife, Cheryl, seizes the opportunity to clean up the clan's act. It isn't as if any show is going to popularize my sentiments or views. But these Aussie productions aren't the PC tripe dressed up as "history" by British TV revisionism which really takes any sense of entertainment out of the view. Ex: Ripper Street (2013); or any of the many (formerly BBC Masterpiece Theater) Masterpiece series broadcast on PBS.

We need a massive government program to tag all wild animals and monitor then by satellite so we can better assess the situation. Because only Obama can stop the rise of the SuperVolcano of Doom. More concerning, to my thinking, is, the article said, the Calif 5.x quake was connected with a recent series of quakes in Yellowstone. What?

The laser part is nothing.   The part that is freaky is how they get to your lens.

Are you sitting down?

First, they have to put in those speculum thingys that hold your eyelids open.  Think Clockwork Orange.  Then they have to attach some kind of device directly to your eyeballs that has some kind of knife blade that cuts into your corneas in a circular fashion like a can opener.  Your cornea is now converted into a flap just like a can of tuna would be and is lifted out of the way for the laser to position itself and fire pulses, slicing away to fix your vision.  All the while, you are awake and seeing this happen in real time.  After everything is cut, your cornea flaps are put back into position and then you are done.

Someone has to drive you home because it will feel like someone poured lemon juice directly into your eyes for the next several days.

Best thing I ever did for myself.

It was a musical comedy of a movie it seems.  Young couple decide to have their wedding aboard a cruise ship.  While the love birds sing of their love, the father of the bride laments his financial destruction in counter-point.  Then for some odd reason Terry Thomas crashes the party.  So the best men, all wearing kilts, lift up one of their number and using him as a battering ram send Terry Thomas overboard.  Thus ending the movie.

Do it!

If the doc asks if you want dual vision, where they only do one eye so you can still read up close things, say no!  The whole point is to see far away without glasses.  At least, that's what I think.

If you are uncomfortable with the actual surgical portion, take the valium before you go in.  The entire process, both eyes, took me no longer than 5 minutes.  The whole ordeal, actually coming into the room, talking with the doc a final time to go over everything that was going to happen took another 5 minutes, so you will be in and out in 10 minutes or so.

It is really nothing at all.

422 Preventative care. Costs less to prevent than cure. Same could be said about well baby care then. Why do they cover well baby care. Why not wait until they are sick? Let's be clear here- it only "costs less to prevent than to cure" if you were going to get whatever malady in the first place. And even then "not necessarily." Babies should be immunized because they're so communal- failure to immunize your own child (or get certain vaccines yourself if you're around children much) can result in epidemics. Failure to get your Flu shot is mostly only going to suck for you.

426 I think that Donald Trump was right about the Ryan budget years ago. It is stupid because it is never going to happen, and because it gives the Democrats a target to say the Republicans want to take your stuff. Because, you will note, they never did it. Blatantly, catastrophically false.  Preventative care costs more because rather than spending $800,000 on one cancer patient, you're spending $2,000 on millions of patients PLUS the $800,000 for the one who comes back positive.

Dems didn't the the US socialist overnight. They did it over 100 years with very small innocuous changes over time.

Yet every budget from the GOP is a massive cut $5T or $10T of spending, which is never ever going to come close to passing. The smarter play is to cut $30B. That can be sold to the American people even with a screaming MSM saying grandma will starve. It worked with sequestration even as Obama/MSM were predicting doom.

Then the next year $50B. Then $70B. And so on.

Small changes over time lead to big changes. Why does the GOP not ever fucking get this?

442 421 Torchwood totally ruined Capt. Jack as a character. He went from a guy very comfortable being himself and willing to clash with the Doctor in Dr. Who to a flaming gay in Torchwood. Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at April 02, 2014 10:27 AM (7oL8c) I agree with this assessment. I liked the character on Dr. Who. He was usually a nice bit of comic relief, with the constant leering at anything that moved at the most inappropriate of times. That whole schtick was killed completely towards the end of Torchwood and through the two miniseries.

443 Future Congresses can't be bound by acts passed by the current one. I would love for a politician to come out and say, "Look, we can't balance the budget next year. It simply cannot happen- the disruptions would be too great across all sectors of our society. What we *can* do and *will* do is trim the budget to buy ourselves more time. And as long as you keep us in power, we will continue to do that. As long as you keep us in power in DC, we will have the budget balanced in the next 7 (or whatever nearish term) years." Of course, then they'd actually have to do that...

447 Babies should be immunized because they're so communal- failure to immunize your own child (or get certain vaccines yourself if you're around children much) can result in epidemics. Again, you don't understand what insurance means. Insurance means buying down risk. When you buy insurance, whether auto, home, life, medical, liability you're paying someone to eliminate risk. That's it.

When you start talking about paying for well checks and flu shots, you're not talking about insurance anymore.

465 Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at April 02, 2014 10:30 AM (QFxY5) Certainly you "can." How frequently does that happen, though? In point of fact, if you're carrying the influenza virus- even if you've had the vaccine yourself- there's still a chance that you can give it to someone else. And common sense applies. If you have the flu- stay home. Drink lots of fluids, limit visitors, etc, until you're better. What also happens is that some people have a very, very bad reaction to the flu vaccine- my wife does to the point that she's under doctor's orders not to get the vaccine anymore. I said "mostly" for a reason. But if you *do* get the flu, it's not really that hard *not* to transmit it to other people. All that said- even granting your (now moot) premise- are you suggesting that there is *not* a good "protection of societal health in general" reason to cover vaccinations kids if there is not also a good reason to cover vaccinations of adults?

Vaccinating kids is a good idea. But it's not the job of insurance companies to do so. This is what drives me insane about health discussions. Health care and health insurance are conflated. And this is done by everyone left and right. Which plays into the Dems' hands because it is now accepted dogma that lack of health insurance means lack of health care.

559 Milady Webworker went in yesterday to renew the plates on her car... on the last possible day, like a bunch of other folks. Ten people in line ahead of her, ten minutes to get through. She complimented the clerk on their efficiency, considering how busy it was. Oh, it's been like this all day, th clerk replied. Cheerfully. They really are nice folks there, our neighbors. Both locations, too!

Oklahoma, where the DMV is NOT a portal to Hell.

Our county, anyway. YMMV

That's because they are private businesses.  Get bad service at one, go to another one next time.  The only exception is the tag office that does the driver's test--one per county.

Posted by: Insomniac at April 02, 2014 11:00 AM (DrWcr) story time! told this one before, but it's appropriate. I'll try to keep it short. training a rookie instructor, Fitz, who was a hoot. We had a douche for a section supervisor. We were on our 3d uniform, been pushing troops for 2 days in about 20 minutes of sleep in 100 degree heat, 95% humidity. we're training, we're gettin stuff done. Call comes out "Sgt Tango, Sgt Fitz, report to MSgt Douche." We'd just come back from running our gremlins through the o-course and Douche found some "sand" in a locker. Normally, it's customary to give 24 hours grace time after the o-course to clean shit up, but nope, not this asshole. So we get into his office. We both smell like sweat and hate. He aint there. He keeps a jar of Boston peanuts on his desk. Fitz closes the door, dumps the jar into his tighty whiteys and rubs them up, back, forward, sideways... replaces them. I laughed through every section meeting for a month watching Douche pop those into his pie hole. "want one?" "Nope. I'm good."

563 Late to thread but I just have to say BS to zombie John Gotti. I have dealt with the standards as well and you are absolutely wrong that the problems we are seeing are "local implementations". The entire point of common core is in the first word "common" the textbooks, the worksheets, the tests are the SAME. Sure there is variation in terms of whether a district picks Pearson or Houghton Mifflin, but the heart of it is the standards which are the same and they are poor.

Posted by: ParanoidGirlinSeattle at April 02, 2014 08:02 AM (RZ8pf)

564 As I have pointed out many, many times, what everyone keeps pointing to as Common Core is not. Posted by: Zombie John Gotti at April 02, 2014 07:35 AM (zT0DN) ___________________________ John - Please explain the following Common Core Crap relating to (what USED to be) simple addition or subtraction at the FIRST GRADE LEVEL: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.B.3 Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract.2 Examples: If 8 + 3 = 11 is known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.) To add 2 + 6 + 4, the second two numbers can be added to make a ten, so 2 + 6 + 4 = 2 + 10 = 12. (Associative property of addition.) CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.B.4 Understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problem. For example, subtract 10 - 8 by finding the number that makes 10 when added to 8. Add and subtract within 20. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.C.5 Relate counting to addition and subtraction (e.g., by counting on 2 to add 2). CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.C.6 Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
